Manufacturing contributes 14% to Gauteng’s real economy output and provides 40% of South Africa’s manufacturing overall. More than 600 000 people are employed in the sector, with metal products, food and beverages and chemicals being the biggest employers.

Manufacturing related to the mining industry, historically the lynchpin of the Gauteng economy, is still very important. Manufacturing sectors such as processed foods, iron and steel, textiles, coal products, motor vehicles and parts, can be promoted in Africa.
